4 Colour Choices to Make Small Spaces Appear Bigger

commercial painters Sydney

If you are looking for ways to make a small room feel brighter and more spacious, you might focus on the paint colour choice rather than the furniture you select. From stark white to dark navy, certain colours embrace cosiness or reflect light to create the illusion of space.

Read on to know about four colours you should consider for small rooms.

1. Soft Black (Charcoal)

Soft black or Charcoal paint is suitable for creating magnificence in a small, north-facing room. By accepting the lack of bright natural light in this room, you can embrace the dark, creating a feeling of intimacy and cosiness.

If you actually want to enhance this feeling, select to paint the ceiling the same colour as the walls.

Another choice is to choose glossy black paint from the opposite end of the spectrum. The high shine will reflect light across the room, creating a mirrored effect that enhances the sense of space. This is more suited for a bathroom because a gloss finish does well in damp areas.

2. Blue

You can consider using sky or pale blue if you have a small room. Not only does blue make a room appear larger, especially if you choose it with a combination of white ceilings, but it is also scientifically proven to relax the mind.

If you are doubtful about having too much blue, try painting it to only one or two walls.

Conversely, navy or dark blue can create drama in a small space, making it appear larger. You can use it thoughtfully by making a dark blue feature wall or use it all to paint ceilings, walls, and trim in the same shade.

3. Crisp or Stark White

Needless to say, white is the first choice for the majority of people looking to make a room feel larger. Whether you use a matte or gloss finish paint, it reflects light around a space, creating the illusion of space and brightness.

Pairing a stark or crisp white with light wood furniture pops of bright colours in artwork and furnishing, and indoor plants for an airy, light feel. If you find a stark white too loud, then look for a white with pink, green, or blue undertones to soften the look of your space.

4. Greige or Taupe

Neutral is always in style, and grey, beige or taupe makes a great substitute for white in a small room. These colours are so light that they reflect the much-needed light around a room—making it appear larger—and add a pinch of colour for the people bored by whites.

White can also look quite over-bright in a room, especially one that receives lots of bright sunlight. Greige or Taupe paint provides a toned-down softer option.
